I’ve been thinking of writing this post for a long time but I never seemed to get around to it until now.
I recently saw something in my InBox regarding Travis the Bum Marketing Method Guy’s latest…
I won’t bore you with the details on that but one thing that struck me as very unique and powerful was how much support he gives his affiliates.
Most product owners merely create a product, then the affiliate program, then might even offer a few sample emails and blog posts for their affiliates to use for their promotions of the product.
What Travis does is he provides an article for you to use, plus some keywords to target for SEO or PPC marketing, and he also provides a whole lot of other affiliate marketing tools, too.
So, this got me thinking… what are most program and product owners missing in their support of their affiliates?
Now granted, most affiliate marketing sales come from marketers promoting each other’s products but that is more for the IM niche, and doesn’t necessarily apply to the world outside of IM.
Yes, Virginia, there is a world outside of IM
Some of the biggest and best product launches that I’ve seen did a few things
#1- When clicking the order button, the clicker isn’t immediately directed to the order page, but to a follow up page for further reinforcement of why the person should get the product.
#2- These really good launches only had optin boxes instead of sales pages and to me that’s a big YES for the program owners to do. I think it’s a great idea to get the optin because as we all know, people don’t buy right away from the first contact and sometimes it requires a few followup emails to get tire-kickers to conver tinto buyers, and that’s why the optin box instead fo the order button seems to work really well.
Plus, since most affiliate programs work off of cookies, merely sending interested parties to the sales page and letting the followup emails do more work for your eventual affiliate commissions means more sales for the affiliates.
#3 As mentioned above, making it super-easy to promote your product is really the best way to treat your affiliates because it shows you have a certain empathy for how well they do promoting your product.
Blog posts, articles, places to advertise, keywords to use, sample emails to use etc….
These are the things I’d like to see more product owners doing for their affiliates.
Now, if I could only stop writing blog posts to practice what I preach
