A lot of people claim to tell the “truth” about internet marketing and having an online business, but the fact of the matter is, truth, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder.
As I learned in my college philosophy clases (when I wasn’t dozing off a hangover) is that philosophers have realized that truth, real truth is not attainable because it is based upon the sensory perceptions and observations of humans.
And humans are faulty all over… from our thought processes to our bodies to the way we interpret data.
When I wasn’t sleeping through my psychology classes, I also learned that the observer of an experiment affected the experiments under observation just by being there.
All I can tell you is the “truth” as I have experienced it in my 2+ years of marketing to other internet marketers and coaching dozens of people to help them build real businesses online.
There are 4 types of people out there in the internet marketing world…
1- There are those who blame their failures on the “gurus” not giving them what they need to truly succeed, and while this may be partly true, there’s a large degree of personal responsibility that isn’t being addressed by these people.
The internet has a ton of information out there and a lot of the good information IS available for free, so it’s just a matter of aliigning yourself with good sources of information and finding people that truly want to help you.
2- There are those who are serial learners who are meant to be followers. They follow all sorts of different marketers until they find someone that speaks to them in a way they can understand and abide by their teachings.
After a while though, the search for the right teachers must cease, and the implementation must begin.
Serial learners must take action and there is a fear aspect to their mindset because they’re looking for that magical step-by-step guide that will finally “do it” for them.
3- The third type of person that I have worked with is the type that is trying, they are taking action and doing “all the right things”, but the massive success seems to be eluding them.
I love working with these types of people because I find that their business only needs a few simple tweaks in order to grow at the rate their efforts deserve it to grow at.
4- The fourth type of person I see out there is the one who is totally not focussed at all. They’re the ones telling me about the latest product, showing me the latest sales page, and when they ask me my opinion of those products, I cringe inside.
I cringe inside because these types of questions reveal to me that they are still wading in a whirlpool of unfocussed thinking and they’re so hooked by the “IM” niche that it will be a small miracle should they ever find a way to extricate themselves from their mindset trap.
But what about the Internet Marketers themselves?
If you think the “IM” niche is just a bunch of buddies promoting each other’s products and scratching each others’ back via product promotions, you are partially right.
There are also some marketers who are doing 2 things at once:
1- They’re in the trenches learning new things daily to share
2- They trying to be the marketers by selling while learning.
If you’re an internet marketer marketing to other marketers then you have to get really good at one thing while you’re off learning new stuff in the trenches.
For example:
You could be a list-building dynamo and then have some followup emails doing your marketing for you and you can enjoy a nice income from that…but in the meantime you should be learning something of value you can pass off to your list in a free report or something like that.
To be a seller with no real knowledge gained in the trenches means you have absolutely no idea what really works and you should be aspiring to develop real knowledge that you can share with your subscribers/readers.
I consider that a self-fulfilling prophecy-type of business plan because sooner or later, your readers will realize you have nothing but sales pitches to offer and you don’t really know how to help them… only how to sell to them.
As mentioned before, the “IM” niche is full of people promoting each others’ products and the smart marketers only promote quality products.
This is a business-world here though and in real businesses, contacts are made, and Joint Ventures are done, and networking does take place between like-minded business people.
Therefore, to think of the “IM” niche as a good ole boy system isn’t necessarily a bad thing because it is the way things work in the real business world.
The “guru-envy” that causes people to unsubscribe from lists in masive numbers every time there’s a major product launch is really not hurting these “gurus” and is really only a manifestation of your pissed-off-ness at all these buddies ganging up on you, (or so it seems to you maybe)…
This is what I have seen an experienced in my time doing this.
